Case study | Shingles treated with herbal medicine

Shingles causes a painful rash that may appear as a stripe of blisters on the torso. Pain can persist even after the rash is gone (this is called post-herpetic neuralgia).

It is late winter in South Africa. The dry climate may trigger many skin diseases especially for the ones whose immune systems are weak.

Here we are going to share one shingles case treated with herbal medicine.

Patient, M, 35yrs

First consultation: 2018-7-17

Main complaint: shingles on the right ribs region goes all to way to the right back. Severe pain with blisters. Reg tongue greasy coating.

Diagnosis: shingles

Prescription: 1. Avoid spicy food

  1. Jin yin hua 10g Xuan shen 10g Dang gui 10g Huang qin 10g Huang lian 6g Gan cao10g Jie geng10g Sheng ma 10g Chai hu 12 g Lian qiao 20g Chen pi 10g Bo he 6g *3days

(The third day after treatment)

Second consultation: 2018-7-20

Main complaint: symptoms are much better than before, not that much pain.

Prescription: Sheng di 15g Zhizi8g Huang qin 10g Chaihu 12g Cheqianzi 15g Zexie 10g Danggui10g Gancao10g Lianqiao20g * 5 days

Third consultation: 2018-7-25

Main complaint: Almost recovered, no pain.

Main complaint: Avoid spicy food.

Summary

In this case, the patient suffered from shingles. In Chinese Medicine, shingles may due to liver qi stagnation or excess spicy food.
